UK subscription rules (DMCC) for Stripe merchants: what Stripe already does, what's missing
Draft regulations laid in Parliament on 25 Oct 2026, approval pending, planned start 1 Jan 2027, details may change. Source: legislation.gov.uk/ukdsi/2026/9780348287912.
What Stripe already does
- Trial-end reminder: Stripe emails the customer 7 days before a trial ends, with a cancellation link. The reason is a card network rule, not UK law. As of 2026-10-26. Source: Stripe docs, manage trial compliance; DMCC Act 2024 s. 258(3)–(4).
- Renewal emails: Stripe has a switch for renewal reminder emails. As of 2026-10-26. Source: Stripe Billing settings; DMCC Act 2024 s. 258–259.
- Cancellation: the customer portal lets customers cancel immediately or at period end. As of 2026-10-26. Source: Stripe customer portal docs; DMCC Act 2024 s. 260.
What is still missing
- Six-month cycle: renewal emails go out every month on monthly plans, but there is no six-month reminder rhythm. As of 2026-10-26. Source: DMCC Act 2024 s. 258(1)–(2), (5).
- Second reminder for annual plans: no additional earlier reminder when the next payment is due after more than 12 months. As of 2026-10-26. Source: DMCC Act 2024 s. 259(6)–(8).
- Cooling-off period with pro-rata refund: the portal refunds nothing on cancellation; refunds are manual or via the API. As of 2026-10-26. Source: DMCC Act 2024 ss. 264–265, 267; Stripe customer portal docs.
- Cancellation confirmation within 24 hours: no mandatory confirmation email is documented. As of 2026-10-26. Source: DMCC Act 2024 s. 261.
- Proof beyond 60 days: email logs are kept for 60 days, which is short for showing that the customer was informed. As of 2026-10-26. Source: Stripe email log retention; DMCC Act 2024 s. 272.
